RO/DI Water Applications
The High-Performance RO/DI Water Purification System has a wide range of applications, including but not limited to:
- Feed Water for Ultra Purification
Given that it is already filtered to an extremely high level of purity, RO/DI water is the perfect base for ultra-purification via methods such as distillation. - Medical Equipment/Autoclave Sterilisation
Our High Performance RO/DI System is clean and compact, perfect for installation in a clinical environment, with the option to upgrade the storage tank for emergencies/increased purified water demand. The system can be also configured to automatically feed water into the autoclave/sterilizer, saving clinic staff or a distilled water supplier the time, labour and cost of constantly having to manually dispense distilled water into another vessel. - Topical Cosmetic Use & Formulation
Purified water (aqua) is the major component in most cosmetic products - regular tap water is often not used due to the chemical smell and reaction that chlorine and certain minerals can have with other ingredients in the formulation, whilst chlorine can also irritate the skin. RO/DI water is therefore, a great alternative for use in cosmetic applications such as ingredient formulation, or where tap water would otherwise be topically applied (ie. in spa treatments and facials). - Craft Brewing and Micro Brewing
Do you like your water with barley and hops? Us too! And like any true beer aficionado, we understand that it's the water provenance (specific geographical water chemistry) that explains why Ireland is famous for Stouts and Dark Ales, whilst Germany produces outstanding Pilsners! Whether you're after a balanced profile, something light coloured and malty, or you're brewing ales and lagers, take the guesswork out of your brewing water target profile and mash chemistry calculations, by starting with the purest, softest, TDS- and contaminant-free water. Getting the pH right is vital to ensuring optimal enzymatic reactivity, protein coagulation, and the correct conditions to promote yeast and inhibit bacterial growth during fermentation. Further, the sulfate-to-chloride ratio responsible for beer bittering, malt flavour, and mouthfeel - yet another important factor that must be controlled to produce the perfect brew. Even benign contaminants such as the presence of unwanted minerals and salts can wreak havoc with the yeasts in your mash, ruin the aesthetics/taste, and cause a hazy brew. Stop paying for expensive tests/stressing about the existing mineral content, and get your beer chemistry right by starting with a blank slate, which makes it easy to tweak your inputs (i.e. calcium, bicarbonates, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and sodium) and ensures the perfect balance and alkalinity for the style of beer you are brewing! - Gardening
RO/DI Water is purer than most rainwater, meaning impurities like chemicals and heavy metals are not present. Having the purest possible water is of vital importance to organic/biodynamic farmers and avid horticulturists, whereby starting with the purest possible water helps to ensure that fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers are free from contaminants and minerals that can react with fertilizers, alter the delicate pH balance of soil/growing media, and harm the plant's roots (for example, certain orchid species that grow high in trees have adapted to ultra-pure rainwater and do not tolerate hardness (TDS)). For the avid horticulturist/technical guru, this system could even be set up alongside a misting system to prevent the scale and sediment build-up that commonly occurs in pipes and valves, whilst supplying super pure water for greenhouses and sprouting. - Hydroponics
The word hydroponics literally translates to "working water", and because each plant species has its own unique requirements, starting with pure water is the ultimate way to control the pH and tailor your nutrient solution profile to the specific needs of the plant being grown. The absence of chlorine in purified water also provides the right conditions to enhance the micro-biodiversity of your hydroponic solution, which can help good bacteria and fungi to flourish, thus boosting plant root health, increasing the growth rate, and improving overall quality/yield. - Aquaponics
The addition of ammonia alongside chlorine produces chloramine, and this method is commonly used in many municipalities as a secondary disinfection agent to provide longer-lasting disinfection than chlorine alone. However, both chlorine and chloramine are fatal to the beneficial nitrifying bacteria that are foundational to a healthy aquaponics environment. Chlorine and chloramine are both toxic to fish, too - hence why it is important to provide only the purest source water as the basis for a thriving aquaponics microcosm. - Aquariums
As with aquaponics, removing harmful chemicals is crucial to ensuring the health of your aquarium tank. However, chemicals aside, there are also some seriously awesome benefits of using RO/DI water in your aquarium, such as better aesthetics (crystal clear water clarity and less potential for algal growth), stopping scale deposits (which harm fish and coral), and minimising maintenance (because you have cleaner, healthier water, and thus fewer problems to deal with). Saltwater aquarists especially will appreciate the level of commitment required to monitor and maintain optimal water conditions to ensure the health, brilliance, and reproductive needs of reef corals and marine life. However, most beginner aquarium enthusiasts make the rookie error of using tap water treated with a conditioner with the goal of saving money - but then wonder why their ecosystem struggles (or dies altogether). Even with nutrient export and supplementation, the chemical composition of conditioned tap water is nowhere near the standard of purity required for marine life to thrive - it still contains contaminants and toxins that disrupt the delicate microbiological processes of marine invertebrates (such as volatile organic and inorganic compounds, chloramines, fluoride, heavy metals, agricultural fertilizers, disinfection by-products, and even antibiotics). In the long run, creating your own ultra-pure water at home is more cost-effective than buying source water (whether you purchase purified or bioactive seawater), and can help prevent the headache of accidentally killing or shocking your reef with poor quality water. It also allows you to start with a blank slate and customize your critical reef aquarium water parameters (such as the pH, salinity, alkalinity, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates, calcium, magnesium, iodine, and strontium), to mimic the delicate natural environmental conditions that support even the most exotic marine species.
Before You Purchase/Open:
The system requires specific working conditions be met before installation. If these conditions are not met, the system may not be suitable for the application and may not function as specified.
Feed Water Conditions | Min | Max |
Inlet Pressure | 400 kPa* | 700 kPa |
Temperature | 4.5°C | 38°C |
pH Level | 2 | 11 |
TDS | 0 mg/L | 2,000 mg/L |
Iron | 0 mg/L | 0.3 mg/L |
Manganese | 0 mg/L | 0.1 mg/L |
Hardness | 0 mg/L | 200 mg/L |
*Minimum inlet pressure is 400 kPa for the system to function correctly. Running the system lower than 500 kPa will cause the rejection rate to decrease. If you are not able to supply 500 kPa to the system, it is suggested to purchase the H1-302B system which includes a booster pump. Alternatively, you can test the water pressure BEFORE you purchase, with a Water Pressure Test Kit.
Double Carbon RO/DI Purified Water | The 5 Stages of Filtration
Stage 1: The 1 Micron Sediment Cartridge (2-46-1 ST-01) (Replace Every 6 Months)
The first stage is a 1 Micron (uM) Sediment filter composed of 100% melt-blown polypropylene fibre. This cartridge helps to help protect the carbon pre-filters and reverse osmosis membrane from physical damage caused by particulate matter such as sand, dirt, silt, plant spores, and pollen. Physical contaminants such as these (which can surprisingly be found in most municipal water supplies), tend to clog up filter system components causing reduced water flow, lower osmotic pressure, diminished filtration efficiency, and ultimately, inferior water quality. Changing this filter every 6 months is vital!
Stage 2: The Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Pre-Filter Cartridge (4-55-GAC ST-33) (Replace Every 6 Months)
The second stage is a high-grade granular activated carbon pre-filter. This type of loosely-packed carbon enables a high level of water flow through the system, whilst "taking the first hit" to absorb harmful organic chemicals and contaminants. Keeping up with regular maintenance of this pre-filter (changing it every 6 months) helps to extend the life of all filters that come after it, including the reverse osmosis membrane.
Stage 3: The 5 Micron Coconut Carbon QC Cartridge (4-55-CTO ST-CTO) (Replace Every 12 Months)
The third stage is a 5-micron high-grade coconut carbon block pre-filter. Similar to the GAC filter, but with a unique carbon block matrix for maximum surface area and contact time, this special carbon cartridge takes the biggest load of contaminant removal, prior to the membrane. Replace every 12 months.
Stage 4: The Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane Cartridge (50GPD Filmtec) (13-RO50 ST-RO50) (Replace every 3 Years)
Stage 5: Virgin Mixed Bed Deionising Resin Post-Filter Cartridge (4-55DI) - (Replace Every 6-12 Months depending on source water quality and usage)
The final stage features a Virgin Mixed Bed Deionising Resin, composed of highly purified acid cation and base anion resin that creates a higher level of purity than using RO filtration alone. Note that the higher the TDS of the incoming feedwater, the higher the residual percentage of TDS that will be left post-filtration by the RO. Thus, the purpose of the DI filter is to "polish" the water and pick up any residual TDS (salts) left. This cartridge produces consistent results where the highest quality of pure water is required, with minimum ionic and non-ionic contamination.
