Triple Undersink Filter System for Coffee Machines and Appliances | 10" x 2.5"

A three stage undersink filter system for appliances that heat water. Sediment, then carbon, then ScaleSoft® SS-10 salt-free scale control. It arrives pre-assembled on its bracket with all three cartridges fitted.

Suitable for domestic and commercial installations. The same system sits under a domestic sink feeding a plumbed-in espresso machine, or behind the counter in a cafe feeding the machine, the grinder line and the ice maker.

What scale does to a coffee machine

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it is heated those minerals come out of solution and deposit on the hottest surfaces in the machine: the heating element, the boiler wall and the group head. The deposit insulates the element so it draws more power for less heat, narrows the water paths, and moves the machine off its brew temperature. Left untreated it blocks them.

Descaling reverses it, but it means taking the machine out of service, and on a commercial machine that usually means a service call.

Scale

Scale forms when hard water is heated. It builds on the heating element and inside the boiler, insulating the element so it draws more power for less heat, and narrowing the water paths until they eventually block. ScaleSoft® conditions the calcium and magnesium so they stay in suspension and pass through the machine rather than bonding to hot metal.

Chlorine and taste

The 1 micron coconut carbon block reduces chlorine, taste and odour before the water is heated. Chlorine survives the boiler and carries through into the cup, so taking it out upstream is the change most noticeable in the coffee. The minerals are left in the water, which is deliberate and covered below.

Servicing

Descaling means downtime, and on a commercial machine it usually means a service call. Slowing the rate at which scale forms reduces how often that is needed.

What is in the system

Housing Cartridge Part code
Stage 1 Sediment, 5 micron polyspun GT2-2K
Stage 2 Carbon, 1 micron coconut carbon block GT4-6CTO
Stage 3 ScaleSoft®, salt-free scale control SS-10

All three cartridges are supplied and fitted. ScaleSoft® takes the final housing, with the carbon block ahead of it. The order is sediment, then carbon filter, then ScaleSoft®. The carbon stage removes chlorine before the water reaches the scale control media, which keeps that cartridge inside its own inlet limits and lets it run its full service life.

Triple system stage order, showing sediment, then carbon, then ScaleSoft in the final housing

Also supplied

  • 3 x 10" x 2.5" undersink housings, Pre-assembled on a mounting bracket
  • Pressure limiting valve, which must be fitted as part of the installation
  • 3/8" leak detector valve (GT16-LD-38)
  • 2 x quick connect fittings
  • Housing spanner (GT17-0S)
  • Installation instructions

What each stage does

Stage 1. Sediment, 5 micron polyspun (GT2-2K)

Holds back dirt, silt and rust particles before they reach the carbon block. A carbon block loaded with fine sediment stops working before its media is spent.

Stage 2. Carbon, 1 micron coconut carbon block (GT4-6CTO)

Reduces chlorine, taste and odour before the water reaches the scale control stage and the appliance.

Stage 3. ScaleSoft®, salt-free scale control (SS-10)

Conditions the calcium and magnesium so they stay in suspension rather than depositing on the boiler, the group head and the heating element.

Applications

Domestic

  • Espresso and coffee machines, including plumbed-in domestic models
  • Ice makers and plumbed fridge water lines
  • Steam ovens and combi ovens
  • Instant hot water taps and zip-style boiling units
  • A single drinking water outlet at the kitchen sink

Commercial

  • Cafe and restaurant espresso machines and grinders
  • Commercial ice machines
  • Combi ovens, steamers and proving cabinets
  • Under-counter glasswashers where spotting is a problem
  • Office and staffroom boiling and chilled units

This is a point-of-use system, sized for a single appliance or a small group of outlets on one line. For scale control across a whole property, the 20" x 4.5" whole house systems are the ones to look at.

Dimensions

36 cm high, 37 cm wide and 12.5 cm deep, pre-assembled on a bracket. That fits a standard undersink cabinet and most under-counter spaces. Allow clearance below the housings so the spanner can turn when the cartridges are changed.

Water pressure

The system runs on a supply of 250 kPa to 500 kPa, with a maximum of 500 kPa. A pressure limiting valve is supplied with the system and must be fitted as part of the installation. Below the lower figure the system should still operate, but you may notice reduced flow at the appliance.

The minerals stay in the water, and for coffee that matters

The minerals dissolved in water are part of how flavour is extracted from coffee grounds. Water with the mineral content stripped out tends to produce thin, hollow and sour results, and it is not something that can be corrected at the grinder. Brewing water guidance in the industry targets a range of mineral content rather than none, which is why coffee is not brewed with distilled water.

This is the reason a water softener is not the right choice ahead of a coffee machine. A softener works by ion exchange: it removes the calcium and magnesium and puts sodium in their place. That addresses scale, but it also removes the minerals that extraction depends on.

ScaleSoft® removes nothing and adds nothing. It is not a water softener and uses no ion exchange, no salt and no sodium. It changes the form the hardness takes, conditioning the calcium and magnesium into stable crystals that stay suspended and pass through the machine instead of bonding to hot metal. The mineral content of the water is unchanged, so extraction is unaffected.

There is also no salt to buy, no brine tank, no regeneration cycle and no discharge to drain.

Because the minerals remain in the water, you may still see marks where it is left to dry on a surface. They are far less adherent than untreated scale and wipe off. This is scale control, not mineral removal.

Replacing the cartridges

Cartridge Domestic Commercial
Stages 1 and 2, sediment and carbon 12 months 6 months
Stage 3, ScaleSoft® SS-10 Up to 2 years 12 months

Commercial sites run more water through the system, so the intervals are shorter. The pre-filters are driven by how much sediment and chlorine the supply carries rather than by the calendar alone, so a heavily loaded supply may need them sooner again.

The GT1-11TCM replacement pack carries the full set.

Installation

This system is WaterMark certified to Australian plumbing standards, so it must be installed by a licensed plumber. It arrives assembled on its bracket with instructions. Mount it upright, paying attention to the flow arrow direction, and fit the supplied pressure limiting valve. Allow clearance underneath so the housings can be dropped at a cartridge change.

Important notes

ScaleSoft® conditions water to prevent and reduce scale, but it does not remove calcium or magnesium from the water. It is not a disinfection or purification device, and it is not an ion exchange water softener.

Use on potable mains or treated water supplies. For other water supplies, talk to us first. Private or untreated supplies need a current water analysis before we can recommend a system, and you can start with a water analysis if you are not sure what you are treating.

For the full technical specification, see the Specs/Performance tab.

More about the cartridge

The ScaleSoft® SS-10 in this system is also sold on its own. See the ScaleSoft® SS-10 cartridge page for how salt-free scale control works and the full media specification.
