GAC means (granulated activated carbon) , When GAC is used it’s usually to extract chemicals like chlorine or colour caused by tannins in rain water tanks etc.
Whatever the use there is a much larger amount of carbon in a GAC cartridge than in a block filter.
If you are on mains water and not particularly concerned about ultra-fine filtration then GAC is a good option for powerful extraction of chemicals and generally long like.
GAC can be heavily congested so take a look at the flow rates this filter has to offer before making any decision
