Why It Is Important to Get Your Water Analysed?
It’s important to get your water tested before spending time and money on water treatment! Otherwise, you run the risk of wasting your resources on a treatment that may not be appropriate for your specific water issue!
Water quality can vary from house to house - just because your neighbour has a high iron content in their bore water, it doesn’t mean you do too. Water can also change over time – so water that was tested and found to be high in Sodium 10 years ago, may not be that way today.
Some methods of water treatment are inexpensive, whilst others can be quite costly – so make sure you are getting all of the necessary information before purchasing your water treatment equipment.
Please note:
- -In some cases, water supplies can be deemed as un-usable and this is why we always require an analytical before making any recommendations, as this ensures that you do not waste money purchasing filtration that is useless for your water supply.
- Test results are mineral and trace elements only, NOT bacterial. However, indicators within the analysis can indicate the presence of bacteria, which is generally straightforward to treat.
- Rain Water collected in a tank and Municipal-Supplied Potable Water generally does not need to be tested with an analysis such as this.
- Rain Water is devoid of minerals, making treatment generally quite straightforward.
- Municipal-Supplied Potable Water is already filtered to Australian Drinking Water Standards, and each municipality is obliged to supply a Drinking Water Quality Report to the public each year, which can be accessed easily online.
Where to Start?
- Once you complete the below form, we will email you an invoice for payment.
- Water Analyses range from $330.00 - $440.00 which can be paid by direct deposit or credit card.
- Once payment has been completed, we will send out the sample collection bottles depending on the testing you have selected.

CAUTION:
The Red and Purple Label bottles contain Nitric and Sulfuric Acid which is a corrosive liquid and should be handled with care. Wear appropriate PPE including gloves and eye protection when handling sample bottles. Ensure that the below procedures are followed correctly to avoid sample contamination.
Conducting the sample:
Preparation
- Collect your water sample as close to the bore/supply/water source as possible. Run the water for at least 15 minutes prior to taking the sample.
- Fill a sterile (preferable) & clean container of at least 2L with water from the bore. This is where you will draw the sample water from.
- Prepare a clean working area and ensure all equipment is within reach and unpacked to minimise the chance of contamination.
- Put on a set of gloves and eye protection before opening and handling the preserve bottles.
- Grab a ballpoint pen with ink that won’t smudge or run if wet! DON’T WRITE ON OR LABEL ANY OF THE BOTTLES YET! This is to avoid confusing the filtered & unfiltered samples.
Step 1: Taking the FILTERED SAMPLE
For this step, you will require:
- 1x 0.45uM Syringe Filter
- 1x 10mL Syringe
- 1x 60mL Red Label Plastic Bottle (Nitric Acid Preserve)
1. Tick the box on the label of ONLY ONE of the RED bottles to signify that this is the FILTERED SAMPLE. This is the ONLY box you will tick on ANY of the sample bottles.
2. Rinse the Syringe:
- Open the syringe from its packaging.
- To rinse the syringe, pull out the plunger and fill about a third full of sample water.
- Replace the plunger and gently shake to rinse the internal surfaces of the syringe and plunger.
- Discard the rinse water, and repeat this process 3 times.
3. Rinse the Syringe Filter:
IMPORTANT: Do not suck water up through the filter! You must remove the filter each time before refilling the syringe with new sample water, otherwise, you risk contaminating the sample.
- Suck up sample water into syringe, then add the filter to the end (see above).
- Push through 5mL of sample water through the filter to rinse the filter.
- Remove the filter from the end of the syringe.
4. Take the Filtered Sample:
After you have rinsed the syringe and filter, you are ready to take your FILTERED sample.
- Before starting, ensure that the filter has been removed from the end of the syringe.
- Draw 10 mls of sample water into the syringe.
- Affix the filter to the end of the syringe.
- Filter the water into the designated RED FILTERED SAMPLE bottle.
- Remove the filter before refilling the syringe with new sample water.
- Repeat 6 times or until the sample bottle is full to the brim without spilling, then replace the cap. This is to minimise the presence of air inside the bottle & prevent oxidisation.
ONCE “STEP 1: TAKING THE FILTERED SAMPLE” IS COMPLETE, REMOVE AND DISCARD THE FILTER ONLY. KEEP THE SYRINGE – YOU’LL NEED THE SYRINGE FOR THE NEXT STEP.
Step 2: Taking the UN-FILTERED SAMPLES
For this step, you will require:
- 1x 10mL Syringe
- 1x 40mL Purple Label Glass Vial (Sulphuric Acid Preserve) (Not supplied for Irrigation test)
- 1x 60mL Purple Label Plastic Bottle (Sulphuric Acid Preserve)
- 1x 60mL Red Label Plastic Bottle (Nitric Acid Preserve)
- 1x 500mL Green Label Plastic Bottle (No Preserve)
1. Take the Purple Glass Vial Sample:
- Draw 10 mls of sample water into the syringe.
- Decant the contents of the syringe carefully into the vial 4 times or until it is full (without overfilling), then SECURE the cap.
2. Take the Purple Plastic Bottle Sample:
- Draw 10 mls of sample water into the syringe.
- Decant the contents of the syringe carefully into the Purple Plastic Bottle 6 times or until it is full (without overfilling), then SECURE the cap.
3. Take the Red (Unfiltered) Plastic Bottle Sample:
- Draw 10 mls of sample water into the syringe.
- Decant the contents of the syringe carefully into the Red Plastic Bottle 6 times or until it is full (without overfilling), then SECURE the cap.
4. Take the Green Plastic Bottle Sample:
- Take the lid off the Green Label Sample bottle and submerge it in the water.
- SECURE the cap on under water to eliminate air gaps.
- NOTE: Only the Green bottle is the only one that can be submerged as it does not contain a preserve fluid.
5. Label the Bottles:
Dry the bottles off and label all sample containers with: Your Name, the Water Supply name (E.g. Shed Bore) and the Date/Time of the sample. DO NOT TICK ANY OF THE BOXES ON ANY OF THE LABELS! Only the 1x FILTERED sample should have been ticked at the beginning to avoid confusion!
Step 3: Sample Validation
Once all of the samples have been taken, please email the following to info@filtersystemsaustralia.com.au:
REQUIRED - Please send pictures of:
- Pictures of Sample Bottles: Take a photo of all the bottles at the time of sampling (with the tick boxes on the bottles facing to the front). This is especially important for us to double check that you haven’t accidentally ticked all of the tick boxes, or confused the Filtered and Unfiltered samples - it is of vital importance for the lab that only the filtered sample is ticked! This also helps us to compare the before/after appearance of the bottles (as turbulence during transit can cause matter to fall out of solution)!
Once we review your email, we’ll reply to either give you the green light to send the samples back to us, or contact you to clarify if there appears to be an issue with the samples.
RECOMMENDED – This further information, whilst not technically required, can help us understand what your current set up is and what you are trying to achieve. In addition to the above, please send:
- Pictures of Current Set Up:
- Take a photo of your current filtration/pump set-up and where the sample was taken from.
- If your sample was taken from a Bore, send us a picture of your set up (including tanks, rain-water connections, pumps and piping) and the outlet where the sample was taken from.
- If your sample was taken from a Spring-Fed Dam, send us a picture of the water source, your set up (including tanks, rain-water connections, pumps and piping), and the outlet where the sample was taken from.
- Please confirm in writing:
- Your Filtration Goal: What you are looking to achieve with your filtration (i.e., you would like to use the water for drinking, showering, watering your garden, in your aquarium etc.).
- Your Current Set Up: What is your current set-up? Eg. Dam, then Gravity Fed to Tank, then Pump, then House.
If you have made a mistake during the sampling process, do not send the kit back just yet! Please contact us on 07 5597 4585 (we open between 8am-4.30pm Monday-Friday) and await further instruction.
- If we deem that the error is minor, we may still be able to have your sample analysed.
- If we deem that the error is major, you may have to re-take the entire sample again. Replacement sample kits will incur a $45.00 charge.
Step 4: Return Postage
NOTE: WATER SAMPLES MUST BE TAKEN WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF RECEIVING THE TEST KIT, AND SENT BACK TO US WITHIN 3 DAYS OF THE SAMPLE BEING TAKEN.
Once we’ve validated your samples, please package all the bottles carefully back into the box they arrived in and fill the gaps with the provided shredded paper/packaging material.
- Affix the supplied return label to the box (over the top of the original postage label) and return the samples to an Australia Post office. Please note that sample kits cannot be sent via Express or Air Freight due to the fact that they contain acid.
