Sioux Chief Hydra-Rester - Type A

What is Water Hammer?

Water hammer, also known as hydraulic shock, is a phenomenon that occurs in a fluid system when a sudden change in flow—such as the rapid closing or opening of a valve—causes a pressure surge or wave. This surge creates a shockwave that can result in loud banging noises, vibrations, and potential damage to pipes or fittings. It is commonly observed in plumbing systems but can occur in any fluid-carrying system, such as oil pipelines or hydraulic systems.

Causes of Water Hammer

  • Rapid Valve Closure: Closing a valve quickly stops the flow of water, causing the kinetic energy of the moving fluid to convert into a pressure wave.
  • Pump Start or Stop: Sudden changes in pump operation can lead to pressure spikes in the system.
  • Air Traps in the System: Air pockets can contribute to irregular flow and pressure surges.
  • Long, Unrestrained Pipes: Pipes without proper supports or dampers can amplify the effects of water hammer.

Consequences

  • Damage to pipes and joints, including leaks or bursts.
  • Wear and tear on valves and fittings.
  • Noise and vibrations, which can be disruptive.

How the Sioux Chief Hydra-Rester Works

When a shuttering fixture closes, a pressure wave begins to move back along the pipe. As it reaches the arrester the force acts against the arrester piston, which, in turn, pushes against a charge of air. The air is then compressed, dissipating the wave energy and nullifying the hammering effects. Water Hammer Arresters do not compensate for loosely fitted pipe work. The

HydraRester is formed from Type L copper tube and is cold rolled and spun closed seamless. The piston carries two EPDM seals and is lubricated with approved 111 Silicone Compound. System surge pressure can be kept below 1000kPa while the arrester can operate at a safe working pressure to 2300kPa. The device is easily installed via the versatile BSP male thread and can be fitted in any position 90° to the pipe work.

Sizing & Quantity Required

Sioux Chief Water Hammer Arresters are sized in accordance with the capacity of the arrestor air chamber. This capacity determines the suitability of the arrestor for any given application and is identified by the corresponding assigned letters eg. ‘A’. A fixture unit is a quantity in terms of which the load producing effects on the plumbing system of different types of fixtures are expressed on an arbitrary scale.

This model is Size A which is suitable to serve up to 11 Fixture Units per arrester.

Washing machines and dishwashers are to be treated as remote installations. We recommend utilising  ‘A’ size Arresters at each supply point for these appliances.
For instances where a size larger than A is required, you can add an additional A unit to double the capacity.

Connection

The HydraRester can be easily installed at 90° to the pipe work by utilising the 3/4" M/F BSP ‘T’ fitting. Where there is one known offending fixture the arrester should be located upstream within one metre of this fixture. In a multi-fixture branch line up to six metres, the HydraRester should be placed at the end of the branch between the last two fixtures served. Inspect for leaks after installing and before concealing.
